"Stronger Together, Poorer Apart"

Nick Clegg has set out the Europe Campaign with the message "Stronger Together, Poorer Apart." He has warned that Britain must lead within the EU to protect families from crime, climate change and the recession. "We can only protect British families from crime, the recession and climate change if our country works with other EU countries. Criminals, business, climate change - these things cross borders. So the police, regulators, and environmental action have to cross borders too. It's the EU that makes this essential cooperation possible. Only the Liberal Democrats know how to provide security, jobs, and a clean environment by leading in the European Union. Liberal Democrats backed EU plans for the fast track extradition of thousands of criminals suspects across Europe - including 21/7 bomber Hussein Osman who was extradited in just three weeks from Rome. News from Bill Newton Dunn

Bill tells us that the next EP assembles on the 14th July in Strasbourg. Its first task will be to elect a new speaker. Next the parliament will set up its new standing committees. He hopes there will be a new permanent committee for Climate Change.

Greenpeace on the budget - "not green"

If climate change is great challenge of our time, as ministers regularly tell us, then why is the new money announced for renewables and energy efficiency only marginally more than the Chancellor found earlier this year for RBS bonuses? And while Mr Darling admittedly has urgent economic issues on his mind, surely he can see that concerted investment in renewable technologies, energy efficiency and green manufacturing are the best way to meet our joint climate and economic crises head-on.

According to Friends of the Earth Alistair Darling has squandered a huge opportunity to create a low-carbon economy and create thousands of green jobs by investing in renewable energy and cutting energy waste on the scale required.
