Green Hero - Dr Kate O`Kelly

Dr Kate O`Kelly is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Chichester and has lived and worked in the area for years. She joined the Liberal Democrats in the wake of the 2015 General Election. She has lived in South Harting, West Sussex for many years as a doctor, working as a GP in Chichester for 10 years, teaching at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and as an old age psychiatrist with dementia patients. And Kate recently joined the bench as a West Sussex magistrate.

Dr Kate is the County Councillor for Midhurst on West Sussex County Council. In 2018 she won a stunning by-election at Chichester District Council, after Tory MP Gillian Keegan vacated her Rogate seat.

Rogate (Chichester) result in April 2018:

LDEM: 55.8% (+55.8)
CON: 40.1% (-27.3)
LAB: 2.6% (+2.6)
GRN: 1.5% (-18.2)

Lib Dem GAIN from Conservatives.

This was the first time that the Lib Dems have contested this seat in eleven years, and the result was amazing, going from zero to 55.8% of the vote! Kate has been successful in reducing cuts to bus subsidies in West Sussex and is fighting to prevent the closure of three schools in the area. She has also been campaigning to Stop Brexit as the impact would be disastrous for the area.

Going for the hat trick, Dr O'Kelly has now been selected as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Chichester in next month's general election, which she argues would be:

'a close battle between myself and the current MP', adding that Gillian Keegan had 'sat on the fence on every issue from Brexit to the A27.'

By now a seasoned campaigner, Kate says:

"The people of this area need a Liberal Democrat MP with the courage of their convictions. They want
someone who will go into battle for them. The [last] local and European elections showed people
no longer trust the Conservatives. They have put their faith in the Liberal Democrats to make a difference.
It's time for electors to have a real alternative to the current chaos, complacency and confusion."
