Back Home in the dry now!

Fatima and I left Glasgow this morning to drive, with our caravan, back home to Nottinghamshire. Nice dry day for packing up and driving for six hours! Listening to the radio 4 news at lunchtime and then watching the TV news when back home, the draft agreeement for COP26 really looks a pretty tame affair. Lots of nice words hoping for this and urging that and calling for the other, but precious little in the way of hard ACTION.

Even on the pathetic response to a promise made years ago that there would be $100 BILLION per year available for Climate Change Adaptation for the most threatened developing countries the document was still expressing hope that it would become available by 2023 - three years too late!

One small kernel of hope was hidden in paragraph 30 which set a new date for reviewing Action of the Parties...

30. Recalls Article 4, paragraphs 3 and 11, of the Paris Agreement, and urges Parties to revisit and strengthen the 2030 targets in their nationally determined contributions, as necessary to align with the Paris Agreement temperature goal by the end of 2022;

What this means in effect is that the 2022 COP meeting destined for Egypt suddenly becomes a more important date in the diary. Countries will be pressed to REALLY update their ambitions and expectations. So, even though the words were `fluffy` and resorted to urging "... Parties to revisit and strengthen ..." their targets, this wording will allow concerted public pressure from civil society to ratchet up our expectations of our various Governments, putting them on the spot to deliver REAL change and REAL action.
