Invitation to back an Emergency Motion on the EU campaign for the York Conference

Love Europe

Since formation of the Liberal Democrats, the Party has believed that it is in the interests of the United Kingdom, and of the European Union as a whole, that the UK takes an active part in EU decision making. The Party and its partners in the ALDE Group are striving to improve the EU, including by increasing its efficiency and democratic accountability.

Conference welcomes any reduction in opposition to UK membership of the EU achieved by David Cameron's "Deal", but considers our Campaign must go deeper.
The Liberal Democrats believe:-
1. in a greener world, a stronger economy, and a fairer society;
2. that only a green and environmentally sustainable economy can be a strong economy in the long term, and thus be fair to following generations;
3. that only in a world at peace, can economic strength be harnessed to maximise human happiness.

Conference considers that United Kingdom membership of the European Union is vital to combating rapid climate-change, conserving resources, and bringing peace and stability to Europe and the wider world.

Conference calls for our European Union Referendum Campaign to emphasise these long term aims and beliefs.

The motion fits in with Tim Farron's statement on BBC Sunday Politics - 21/02/2016
The principle of this motion was discussed at Green Lib Dem Exec, and this version has been prepared after 2 GLD Exec members commented on my original draft. It is an Emergency motion, because neither the details of the Deal, nor the referendum date were known at the closing date for the ordinary motions.
Under 1 member 1 vote, ALL paid up Lib Dem Members are entitled to back motions. Only 10 backers are needed to put a motion to the Conference Committee, but the more support motions have the more likely they are to be shortlisted (for the ballot to determine which emergency motions are accepted for debate.
