The Green Liberal Democrats (GLD - established in 1988) are holding a major conference at the Jubilee Campus of Nottingham University on 19th May 2018, to celebrate the group`s 30th Birthday. As well as looking back at the greening of Liberal Democracy over the years, the important stuff will be to decide on our current campaigning priorities as the environmental conscience of the Party and looking ahead to the next 30 years, trying to develop a body of sustainable development policies.
One of our objectives is to ensure the Green LD legacy, so we are making it as easy as possible for younger Liberal Democrats to get involved in our efforts and to take them forward for the future. We have deliberately discounted the delegate fee for Young LDs below the delegate costs for the day, slashing it by more than half to £15 for Lib Dems under 25 against the members` standard delegate fee of £35 (early-bird £30) and the non-member fee of £40.

Not content with the straightforward discounts, however, we have also designed a Competition to enable ten Young Liberal Democrats to get to the conference for FREE, so you can win your money back and effectively register for FREE if you are one of our ten (10) winners. To do this you need to write a short essay on one of the following topics….

These are the options for the essay. We are looking for creativity and clarity and understanding….

- What are the major benefits for you and your constituency party of coming to the Green Liberal Democrat 30th Birthday Conference……. OR …….
- Who has inspired you to be Green in your political philosophy and why?
The Winners
Your essay should be between 500 - 600 words only, so you need to keep your writing crisp please. One essay will be chosen as the overall winner and be published in the Green Liberal Democrat journal CHALLENGE after the conference. And the overall winner and the next nine winning entries will be archived on the Green Liberal Democrat website, so you will have a political publication to your name which might prove helpful if you want to become active as a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate in the future.
All ten winners will have their registration payments returned and there will be a mystery prize for the overall winner! So, spread the word.
We will be promoting this competition amongst Constituency Parties too in the hope that your constituency party might help you with travel costs and/or accommodation if you win one of these ten FREE places (indeed, they may want to help you with expenses anyway! So, try talking with your constituencies!) !!!!! Download the rules !!!!!
When and how to enter
Your essay must reach us by or before noon (12.00 hours) on Friday 20th April 2018, sent by email to Conference Organiser Keith Melton at keith.melton10@gmail.com accompanied by a scan of your entry form, which should be signed by your Constituency Party Chair (or alternative officer) or by one of your Regional Officers (if you are not in an active constituency or if you are simply a member of the national party and not affiliated to a constituency). You must be under 25 years old on 19th May 2018
Judging the Competition
Conference organiser, Keith Melton, (Founding Chair of the Green Liberal Democrats in 1988 and formerly Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development in Business at Nottingham Trent University) will lead the judging panel, consisting of former MP, Simon Hughes (Simon was the keynote speaker at the Green Liberal Democrat inaugural meeting in 1988), Duncan Brack (Duncan is Vice Chair of the Federal Policy Committee. In the last Parliament, he was Vice Chair of the Manifesto Group, and a special adviser to Chris Huhne at the Department of Energy and Climate Change. He also edits the quarterly Journal of Liberal History) … and … Jane Brophy (Jane was on the original Liberal Ecology Group committee and has been Vice-chair of the Green Liberal Democrats on several occasions over the years. She was the Mayoral Candidate in Greater Manchester in 2017)
