Boris must take air pollution responsibility says Hughes

11 Dec 2009

"If London doesn't lead we can't expect the rest of the country to follow," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary.

Commenting on today's announcement that the European Commission will not grant the Government an extension to meet air pollution standards in London, Simon Hughes said:

"This is not a problem that has blown in over night. The European Commission is right not to give the UK an extension to clean up its air. Past and present mayors of London should take responsibility for not doing more.

"Of course air pollution in London will be a more difficult problem than the rest of the country, but if London doesn't lead we can't expect the rest of the country to follow."
