  • Rate of UK emissions of CO2, megatonnes per annum (Steve Bolter)
    Article: Oct 2, 2019
    By Steve Bolter
In 2007, our Lib Dem policy paper 82, "Zero Carbon Britain - Taking a Global Lead", led the way by setting out how we would achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In the Coalition years Secretaries of State for Energy and Climate Change, Lib Dems Chris Huhne and then Ed Davey, were in constant battle with the Tory controlled Treasury, yet made significant progress towards our goal, and continued to do so until 2015.

Prominent activists, hundreds of groups urge U.N. to champion a global ban, call fracking a climate and human rights disaster

New York, NY - On the eve of international youth-led climate strikes and next week's United Nations Climate Change Summit, nearly 500 grassroots groups, faith communities, celebrities, activists and organizations from across the world are calling on the United Nations to endorse a worldwide ban on fracking.

The next two decades will prove to be decisive tackling climate change. As a party, we take the climate crisis very seriously, environmentalism goes hand in hand with liberalism but unless we get elected our solutions remain untested.

This party must take this opportunity to show the courage in our convictions and set the standards in tackling the climate emergency before us. This is the moment we can bring forward a new liberal environmental movement. We must exceed the expectations of the green agenda of other parties with our ambitious policy and plans.

    F29 - Climate Change Action

I am delighted to report that the GLD amendment (at least, most of it!) on the F29 Climate Motion has been accepted for debate by the Federal Conference Committee on Monday 16th September in Bournemouth. There were apparently 15 or 16 amendments to the Climate Change motion, more than for any other resolution on the conference agenda (and a whisper from an inside source has indicated that the FCC chose the GLD amendment because it was the `best one submitted`, rather a nice accolade). So, thank you to everyone helping to hone the wording to perfection!

GREEN LIBERAL DEMOCRATS EMAIL NEWSLETTER , SEPTEMBER 1st 2019

The Executive need to give you, our members, an apology. What with two elections and our own conference, and organising our largest ever programme for federal conference, (not to mention not having an editor appointed) we have failed to deliver the first annual edition of Challenge. This was due to be sent out at the beginning of July. As a result of the publication being delayed, the nomination forms for next year's exec were not sent out. Under the constitution you are all entitled to 60 days before the AGM to receive and process these.

So the Executive has decided to hold an EGM at federal conference - 15/9/2019 6:15pm at the Granville Suite of the Trouville Hotel - with a view to authorising an AGM towards the end of November. That way we can send out the nomination forms at/after conference and we will be able to adhere to all the requirements of the constitution. That is, with the exception of the requirement to have the AGM within 9 months of the end of the previous financial year. The EGM is needed to authorise the rescheduling and enact any additional measures that may be required. The agenda for the EGM is just one item - the rescheduling of the AGM.

We need a 25 member quorum at both meetings, so if you can spare us the time, everything can be sorted out. There will be a top-notch speaker and refreshments at both meetings.

Please also consider nominating yourself for the Executive. We need more people willing to do the hard graft of organisation so that our members can get involved in policy formation and green campaigning!

    Conference and Challenge

Autumn Federal Conference (14-17 September, Bournemouth) is barely two weeks away, and we have a very busy Programme planned. However, as with some other party organisations, we were unable to promote our Programme coherently in the main conference directory, so please keep an eye on the website for information, and come to the stall early for a leaflet detailing what we are doing.

After the previous successful full-day programme at Brighton, we have again booked a hotel meeting room for a whole day to host our events. Most of our events will therefore be on Sunday 15th September in the Granville Suite at the Trouville Hotel, BH2 5DH, just around the corner up the hill from the conference centre.

More details and guides will be published on the website and announced via Twitter and Facebook over the coming fortnight.

GLD Challenge magazine is still being produced and will be out very shortly. At any time you can email articles, tip-offs, your own copyrighted photos and cartoons, or opinion letters to challenge@greenlibdems.org.uk

Please subscribe to daily updates from our website, and follow us on twitter and facebook.

    Time for action!!

At last there is a real sense of urgency in tackling the Climate Crisis and, for once, we environmentalists need not get "shot as the messengers of doom", as has often happened in the past. We can now use the longevity of our activism and prior warnings to begin to offer solutions to the problems the world faces. And this is what we have been doing for some time, including the actions of our ministers during the coalition in boosting renewable energy provision way past what it would otherwise have been.
