Our former MEP, Cllr Jane Brophy sets the scene and former MP and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Jane Dodds, who is summating the UBI motion will explain the role of a Universal Basic Income in wellbeing.

Jane Dodds was born in North Wales in to a Welsh speaking family and live in mid-Wales. She's a a child protection social worker and has been leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats since 2017. Fought the seats of Montgomeryshire in the General Election in 2015 and 2017, was briefly a Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2019, and is a convert to Universal Basic Income.


Jane Brophy MEP (Jane Brophy)Jane Brophy was elected as an MEP for the North West from May 2019 until end of January 2020. She sat as a full member of both the Employment and Social Affairs Committee; and the Delegation to Brazil and as a substitute member on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee and the Delegation to Afghanistan. As a Liberal Democrat MEP Jane was a member of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament.

She has combined her professional role in the NHS with political roles over many years. After being an MEP she returned to work for the NHS as a Diabetes Dietitian and for a while she was Vice-Chair Comms of the Green Liberal Democrats.

ane has been an elected councillor in her home area of Timperley for over 20 years (Trafford, Greater Manchester), within the Altrincham and Sale West Parliamentary constituency. She was part of the Liberal Democrat Leadership Programme of Parliamentary Candidates 2010-15. Jane was the Lib Dem candidate for Greater Manchester Metro Mayor in May 2017.

Jane is an executive member of the Green Liberal Democrats. She is passionate about promoting wellbeing, education, life-long learning and linking these issues to the global emergencies of Covid19, climate change and loss of biodiversity.


Oliver Jones Lyons (Oliver Jones Lyons)Oliver Jones-Lyons is the recently co-opted youth officer of the Green Liberal Democrats as well as serving as a young liberal member on his local executive in Gateshead. In this discussion he will be talking on behalf of Young Liberals outlining his reasons as to why the move to a well-being focused economy must take place after a pandemic which has shown us all just how important non-economic metrics are when considering policy. He will talk about this specifically in regard to the way in which young people are fed up with the economy, environment and system they have inherited and desire a more radical approach to problem solving, especially in areas such as the north east where deprivation is so high and the postcode lottery of public services so clear."
