Managing our Oceans
Our Oceans are becoming waste dumping grounds. Even the detritus from the very recent corona virus pandemic has begun to find its way into the seas around us. Discarded masks and plastic gloves and all sorts of contaminated litter are being washed up on beaches even though the pandemic is really only a few months old.
The session begins at 4:30pm with a 30 minute film "Eating Up Easter" - directed by native Rapa Nui filmmaker Sergio Mata'u Rapu, in which he explores the challenges his people are facing, and the intergenerational fight to preserve their culture and a beloved environment against a backdrop of a modernizing society and a booming tourism trade.
At 5:00pm, we then have Julie Andersen, the Global CEO of Plastic Oceans, speaking about her organisation and its work to raise awareness about plastic pollution and to inspire behavioural change. We then have Chris Davies, sharing his thoughts regarding cleaning up of and the governance of the oceans, how we access and farm them etc, both from his time as a Member of the European Parliament and his tenure as the Chair of the Fisheries Committee
