Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has used today's debate on reform of local taxation to lambast the Government's approach and call for a land value tax to replace the "unfair and regressive" council tax.

Speaking after the debate, Mr Rennie said:

"Alex Salmond called the council tax unfair and insisted he would scrap it. Then he didn't.

"Nicola Sturgeon said she "hated" it. Then she criticised any suggestion it should be tinkered with. Yet tinkering is exactly what the SNP Government did last year.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats want to end the unfair and regressive council tax and replace it with a land value tax

"This would be the best way of not just raising revenue but also shaping the way our society and economy works in a fair and just way."
