Technical Advances Lead to Energy Saving, Greater Durability and Faster Working for Road Repairs.

Laying AsphaltTechnical developments are enabling the use of "warm" asphalts in road repairs, bringing in environmental benefits of energy saving, enhanced durability of the carriageway and a quicker reopening of roads to traffic.

The major contractor Keir, working for Highway England, agreed for Hanson, part of HeidelbergCiment, to supply "warm" asphalt to reinstate part of the A66, one of Cumbria's busiest roads, near Appleby.

Hanson produced the asphalt using a specialist admix, Nyepave PX50, which enabled the asphalt to be mixed at 140oC instead of at the usual temperature of 170oC.

The asphalt could be mixed faster and laid and compacted in colder weather at a lower temperature, while also hardening more rapidly.This enabled Hanson to replace a greater length of carriageway between 1930 when the road could be closed and 0800 the following morning when all work had to be completed.

The asphalt was supplied from both Hanson's Shap and Keepershield asphalt plants and proved highly suited to the job and a second specialist product, Nytherm PMB 75 bitumen, was used for the A66's 40mm thick Tuffgrip surface layer.

Both the admix Nyepave PX50 and the Nytherm PMB 75 bitumen were supplied by Nynas AB based in Stokholm. They produce specialist bitumen products at dedicated refineries in Dundee and Eastham.

Products like these will also enable more highway surfacing to take place during the colder months of the year and the greater thermal efficiency they bring to producing and laying asphalt will reduce CO2 emissions.
