Conservative Government a Threat to the Green Revolution – Cllr John Howson
Plans by the Conservative Government to cut subsidies to the green energy sector could mean less investment in clean energy and job losses, claim Liberal Democrats in Banbury. The Conservative Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd, has announced that she wants to end the Renewable Obligation in April 2016. That will mean energy companies will not be required to buy green electricity at a pre-agreed price.
Cllr John Howson, who fought Banbury for the Lib Dems in the general election, said, "When we were in Coalition with the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats had a battle on our hands to get the Conservatives to back the renewable energy sector. Now that the Conservatives are in Government by themselves, their anti-renewables attitude is there for all to see."
Cllr Howson speaking from the Lib Dem Conference added that "The long term aim of the green energy subsidies was to create a new, clean green energy sector. Over time, as the new industry built up strength, the subsidies would be reduce and eventually ended. But the Conservatives are now pulling the rug out from the sector before it is properly established."
"The Conservatives' plans will mean less investment in renewables, fewer jobs and more reliance on coal and nuclear and the resulting pollution and contamination they cause. "The Conservatives are putting ideology and hostility before new jobs, investment and the environment. The liberal Democrats warned of the dangers of letting the Conservatives rule by themselves during the General Election. Sadly, those predictions are already coming true."
