On 6th December 2011 Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable announced the creation of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI). Up to £125 million was made available through the initiative to improve the global competitiveness of UK advanced manufacturing supply chains. Following the closure of Round 1, companies were then invited to express interest in applying for funding via Round 2, which opened for applications in September 2012. On 28th February 2013 the then LibDem Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, announced £213 million of joint government and industry investment to further strengthen UK advanced manufacturing supply chains - creating over 11,000 new jobs and safeguarding another 5,000. Examples of winning bids include the creation of a 'National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme' led by the Aerospace Growth Partnership to address skills shortages and improve R&D collaboration in the aerospace sector, a very important sector in the North West. Fast forward to 29th July 2015 and what do we get. You are right. George Osborne popping up at Norton Motorcycles Ltd to announce £4m of government funding from the AMSCI which will support 600 new jobs, including 200 new apprenticeships in a major boost to British motorcycle manufacturing. Norton was founded in 1902 and was the 'must own' British built bike for 70yrs before succumbing to Japanese competition. The marque did not entirely die and got of the ground back in Britain in 2008. Marvellous news & well done them. Not such marvellous news, and entirely to be expected, is no mention by Osborne of the origin of what he now claims is flagship Tory policy. The LibDem fightback depends on eternal vigilance for such Tory airbrushing of history
