LibDems (unlike some other political parties who just pay lip service to it) genuinely believe in fairness even if that means giving credit to our political opponents. Thus we recognise that, following our previous story, not all Conservatives are as blinkered as their leader, David Cameron, who refers to renewable energy as 'green crap'.
Fylde Borough Council is dominated by Conservatives but they are clearly more enlightened. Fylde's planning committee on 29th July approved plans for a 4.9MW solar farm on poor agricultural land in Freckleton. Previous applications for similar developments elsewhere in the borough have been turned down but yesterday's decision was unanimous! It was the right decision.
There is huge potential for harnessing the sun's rays on the Fylde Coast and much more could be done to install solar panels on all new developments. With 2000 new homes coming on stream in St Anne's (Premium Bonds site, Pontins, Queensway, Kwik Save etc), and more in other parts of the borough over the next few years, generating energy from the sun reduces the need for carbon fuelled power stations and reduces our carbon footprint. So let's hope more will be done
The scheme approved on Wednesday will generate enough electricity to power over 1100 homes yet sheep can safely graze under the solar panels at the same time. Additional hedging and tree planting around the site also form part of the scheme.
