The St Austell & Newquay Liberal Democrats have announced that their candidate for the forthcoming Cornwall Council by-election in Mevagissey will be Chris Maynard - a local Scout Leader, environmental campaigner and former member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Chris works in St Austell for British Energy Saving Technology, researching and marketing products to help businesses reduce their energy consumption. He is a former committee member of St Austell Chamber of Commerce where he also served as Chair of the Planning Committee.

An active environmental campaigner in Cornwall, Chris has also been a member of the Clay Trails Partnership and the Clean Cornwall steering group. Along with his fiancée Katy, he is a Scout Leader at 1st St Austell Scout Group.

Speaking after his selection, Chris said:

"I'm delighted to be standing for Mevagissey, Gorran and Pentewan for Cornwall Council. This is a beautiful part of Cornwall and as I speak with local people, it's clear that the community shares my vision of a cleaner, greener Cornwall.

"I've dedicated a lot of my spare time to voluntary work in the local community and I would be truly honoured to be elected to represent this area on the Council."

Commenting, Stephen Gilbert said:

"I was sorry that my friend Michael Bunney had to step down from Cornwall Council over the summer; but I know that Chris Maynard has the qualities and skills needed to take over the role.

"Chris's experience as a community campaigner, member of the Chamber of Commerce and local Scout Leader means that he knows how to get things done. I'm delighted to be supporting Chris and I know that as a Councillor, he will listen to the local community and stand up for them as an independent minded liberal."
