Plans to charge for emptying green bins

July 25, 2012 11:58 AM

In response to a Liberal Democrat question at Full Council, Labour has suggested that they are considering introducing different day waste collections and reducing green bin collections or charging for the service.

Cllr Ann Reid, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Environment, commented:

"We have major concerns about any plans to reduce green bin emptying or to charge for the service. We are also concerned about plans to introduce different day grey bin and recycling collections. The more complicated you make the system the more likely you are to get people missing collections and resorting to fly-tipping or deciding not to recycle. We have repeatedly pushed Labour for information, but have not received any firm answers.

"Labour allocated huge budget savings in these areas without any detailed plans to achieve them. I know from experience the only way to achieve these massive savings would be to make additional charges, reduce the service or make the collection almost incomprehensible to residents. Labour's ongoing litter bin fiasco shows the danger of introducing unpopular and ill-thought through proposals in this area."
