The Mayor of Bedford will open the Priory Renewables Demonstration Centre, at Priory Country Park Visitor Centre, Barkers Lane, Bedford at 11am, on Sunday 17th June.

The centre has received Growth Area Funding, and funding from the Mayor's Climate Change Fund, to install solar photovoltaic panels, low energy lighting, loft and cavity wall insulation, a natural daylight system, rainwater harvesting and triple glazed windows and doors at the Priory Country Park Visitor Centre.

The measures installed will all reduce energy consumption from fossil fuels, reducing the carbon emissions from the centre and will show householders what they can do in their own homes to incorporate the technologies and reduce their energy and water consumption.

There will also be demonstrations of various wall construction techniques including 'wattle and daub' and 'rammed earth' demonstrated by Bedford College, which involves compressing a damp mixture of earth into a frame to create individual blocks. The Council's Sustainability Team will also have a stand at the event and will promote energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable living.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "This project offers visitors simple, practical examples of ways to reduce their energy and water use and save money. People are interested in real action on the environment, and the renewables demonstration centre shows how households and organisations can make a positive difference. It also brings the benefit of reducing the environmental and financial running costs of the Priory Country Park Visitor Centre itself."

Toursof the technologies installed at the centre will be conducted during the open day which runs from 11am - 3pm.
