Alistair Cameron receives response from government on household flood insurance
Alistair Cameron, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Tewkesbury Constituency has received a response to his letter to Richard Benyon MP, Under-Secretary for Natural Environment and Fisheries which urged the Government to renew the Statement of Principles with insurance companies on flood insurance as soon as possible.
The response from Ria Morodore of the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs says: "As you know the existing Statement of Principles is due to expire on 30 June 2013. Defra is at an advanced stage in intensive negotiations with the insurance industry on alternative arrangements for when the Statement of Principles expires."
The response also says: "We are considering the case for additional measures to help safeguard the affordability of flood insurance for those groups who might struggle most with premium increases. We will look at whether there is feasible, value for money ways of targeting Government funds to help those most in need of support, and will provide a further update on this shortly."
Alistair said: "Whilst am pleased there will be an announcement soon, I will want to look at the small print to see what the alternative arrangements are."
Alistair added: "I am also pleased that consideration is being given to help safeguard the affordability of flood insurance for people who might struggle with premium increases. However, again, I will need to look at the detail to see what this will mean in practice.
"I believe the government has an important role in investing in flood defences and ensuring our drains and rivers are cleaned as well as enabling insurance companies to provide affordable flood insurance."
