Green Liberal DemocratsThe Leader of the Official Liberal Democrat Opposition at County Hall, Cllr Brendan Glynane, is lobbying Government ministers over the issue of investment in flood defences after insurance companies have said they will not renew the agreement which covers how homes and businesses are insured in areas at risk of flooding.
On Thursday Cllr Glynane attended a National Flood Forum conference with the Minister for the Environment, Richard Benyon MP and representatives from insurance companies. This weekend Cllr Glynane will be meeting with the Secretary of State for the Climate Change, Ed Davey MP, to raise this issue.
Cllr Glynane, who is the Chairman of Nene Flood Prevention Alliance and a Director of the National Flood Forum, said "At Easter 1998, 2,500 homes and businesses were flooded. The floods did £140m worth of damage in Northampton. Local residents need to be protected from the risks of flooding. If the Government doesn't sit down with insurers and agree a way forwards, then people's homes are vulnerable. Ministers need to make sure the agreement is renewed and homes and businesses are protected."
