North East MSP Alison McInnes today praised the Udny Community Wind Turbine team for winning the Community Initiative category in the 2011 Scottish Green Energy Awards.

"I was delighted to be present at the awards in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to see that the Udny initiative had been successful. It is a well-deserved honour.

"It is highly commendable that the wind turbine is totally community owned with the profits ploughed back into the area. The project is expected to raise £100,000 a year from selling the electricity to the grid. I believe that among the causes set to benefit in the Udny Green and Pitmedden area include help for sports facilities and support for school-leavers as they prepare for work.

"This is an excellent example of how a community can benefit from green energy generation. I have written to the team to wish them well for the future."
