North Chelmsford Park & Ride fares to rise despite Lib Dem plea

Fares will increase on the newly opened Chelmer Valley Park and Ride only six months after opening. Springfield's Lib Dem County Councillor Mike Mackrory mounted a last-minute bid to stop the rise but the Conservatives pressed on. Cllr Mackrory 'called in' the Cabinet Member's decision to increase the charges from October 10 because he was very concerned that the recent increased usage of the site would be put at risk.

Cllr. Mackrory commented after the Call In meeting: "I am very disappointed that only 6 months after the site opened they are already putting the charges up. We are trying to encourage people to use Park and Ride to ease congestion and pollution, rather than drive into town. I am particularly keen to see University students and staff make use of the site rather than clog up the residential streets near the Campus. This increase is too soon - they should have waited at least a year before any increase."
