Commenting after challenging the First Minister to pin a date down for the completion of the Borders Rail link during First Minister's Questions, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson and MSP for the South of Scotland Jim Hume said:

"In the last few weeks, Ministers have come out in force to assure the public that the Borders Rail Link will be completed on time and on budget.

"This again was reiterated by the First Minister during Question Time today as he assured members of the public that they will be able to buy a ticket and get on train from Edinburgh to Galashiels by December 2014.

"The previous Transport Minister stated in 2009 that 'a contract for the construction of the railway work will be delivered in autumn 2011" but we know now that this contract will not be signed until summer 2012. Nearly a year's difference already, even before construction has even started.

"With continued delays and mounting questions over bidders, the First Minister has, today, made a bold promise. The Scottish Government must choose the right track if this rail link is to ever to become a reality."
