Vince Cable MP: Cycling in Twickenham

August 25, 2011 10:40 AM

• [Aug 24] Vince Cable writes: A FEW months ago my wife, Rachel, and I invested in a pair of good cycles to get around locally . .

. . There are of course some inhibiting factors. There is still an element of risk from lorries in particular. On the dual use footpaths, as on the riverside, walkers feel vulnerable and cyclists are the villains. Some busy thoroughfares, like my own Whitton Road, are not cycle friendly and cyclists are tempted to use the pavements, alarming pedestrians. When the weather is bad, there are few attractions to getting soaked and taking more risks in poor visibility. Out comes the car.

But, overall, we made a good investment and I encourage others to do the same.
