August 20, 2011 12:03 PM

The Gabalfa Focus Team are launching a 'Shop Local' campaign to support our local businesses.

Local councillor, Ed Bridges, explains: "With a new Sainsbury's shop opening at the old Maskreys site on Whitchurch Road, we wanted to remind local residents of all the fantastic independent retailers we've got right on our doorstep. We need a diverse range of businesses, and it's up to us as residents to support our local traders."

The Focus Team have launched a campaign with a simple message - Shop Local. As well as promoting local businesses, your councillors are also carrying out a survey of traders to find out how Cardiff Council can help independent retailers.

Cllr. Cathy Pearcy said: "Over the coming weeks, we'll be continuing to speak with traders around Whitchurch Road and North Road to see what can be done to make life easier for our local businesses."

The Focus Team have already been out and about, speaking with traders - pictured are just some of the businesses from our local area.

Local campaigner, Gareth Holden, said: "It's very much a 'use it or lose it' message - if we want to have a thriving local shopping area, with a wide array of independent traders, then we've got to support them."

The Focus Team are also supporting local Lib Dem Assembly Member, Eluned Parrott, who has called for a reform of business rates in Wales. She has also suggested reducing red tape for small businesses.
