Mike Tuffrey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly member, has called for the Mayor to come clean with Londoners and declare his specific plans for next year's fare rises affecting bus, tube, overground train and also tram travel throughout the capital.
At today's Mayor's Question Time Mike Tuffrey highlighted not only the huge rises in fares that have already taken place under Boris Johnson's mayoralty but also that under the Mayor's current modelling of fares an average rise in fares of more than 7% will take place in January.
Speaking after today's Mayor Question Time Mike Tuffrey said:
"A big fares hike is in prospect next year. Before putting his hand in farepayers' pockets once again, the mayor must cut out waste and examine his big ticket 'vanity' projects.
Mike Tuffrey specifically challenged the Mayor to publish his fares proposals in draft form for the year 2012, so allowing proper examination of them to take place, including the fine details of some fare rises.
Explaining why this was necessary Mike said:
"The mayor must give Londoners the chance to examine his proposed increases before he implements them. That will stop any more stealth increases that hit outer London so hard last year."

2. Mayor's fare proposals are currently based on RPI plus 2%, with the July monthly inflation rate used. Yesterday the Office of National Statistics stated that June's RPI rate was 5%.
3. The 2011 fares package was announced on the same day at the Government's Comprehensive Spending announcement. The fare package included stealth increases as high as 74% due to the abolition of Zone 2 to 6 day travelcards.
