Annette Brooke, Member of Parliament for Mid Dorset and North Poole, questioned the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles on the Government's plans for waste collections in Communities and Local Government Question Time yesterday.
She asked Mr Pickles about what provisions might be put in place for small councils such as Purbeck District Council, which have moved to fortnightly waste collections but would be interested, if funds permitted, in moving to weekly food collections.
Mr Pickles agreed that Annette was making a very good point and confirmed that the Government are considering financial assessments. He went on to note that often the kind of authority to which Annette referred could do with some help with procurement and he added that the Government would certainly hope to deal with weekly collections in all their various forms.
Annette said: "It's important that the Government takes note of small councils like Purbeck and the systems they have in place to ensure that waste collections are working in the best way for the local people. I am glad the Secretary of State took note of my comments and that he acknowledged that smaller authorities often need help with procurement."
Question in full:
Annette Brooke (Mid Dorset and North Poole) (LD): What incentives and support-financial or otherwise-will the Secretary of State's Department give to small councils such as Purbeck district council, which has moved to fortnightly waste collections but would be interested, if funds permitted, in moving to a weekly food collection?
Mr Pickles: My hon. Friend makes my point very well. As the Under-Secretary of State with responsibility for local government and planning announced, we are considering financial assessments. Often the kind of authority to which she referred could do with some help with procurement-we have seen a number of smaller districts get together-and we would certainly hope to deal with weekly collections in all their various forms.
