Commenting on today's Carbon Budget, announced by the Energy Secretary, Chris Huhne MP, which puts the UK on course to cut carbon emissions by at least 80% by 2050, Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West, Mike Crockart, said:

"Today's announcement is the right approach for Britain if we are to combat climate change, secure our energy supplies for the long-term and seize the economic opportunities that green industries hold. It places the British economy at the leading edge of a new global industrial transformation, with Scotland at the forefront of that transformation.

"When the coalition came together last year, we said we wanted this to be the greenest government ever. By fully implementing the advice from the independent Committee on Climate Change, and setting out the most stringent carbon reduction plan of any country in Europe, we have taken a large step towards fulfilling that claim today."
