Tom Brake backs sustainable energy motion

May 10, 2011 5:21 PM

Local MP Tom Brake has backed a motion in Parliament supporting a Bill aiming to increase the use of renewable energy across the country.

Tom, who supported a motion last year encouraging the use of renewable solar energy, said that the Bill would be a positive step towards preserving our natural resources and implementing a sustainable energy plan for the future.

He said: "We have to be aware of the importance of energy efficiency, in particular during these difficult economic times."

The Bill would require local authorities to publish sustainable energy plans for their area, in particular specifying what steps they would take to promote energy efficiency measures. It would also encourage the use of low carbon sources of energy.

Tom added: "It would be irresponsible for us to continue ignoring renewable sources of power. Any move that forces local authorities to ensure that energy plans take the importance of sustainable energy into account is a very positive one."
