Bedford is set to be at the forefront of the forthcoming electric car revolution, after it was confirmed that four charging posts will shortly be installed in public places around the town, with another four to follow. There will be two plug-in points on each post, which will be installed thanks to the Council's leading role in two joint bids for local areas to be amongst the first places where residents who wish to reduce the cost of running a car and their impact of the environment are able to consider the growing range of electric vehicles now coming onto the market. The first four new posts will be installed in the next few months, and with the electricity to be supplied through a sponsorship arrangement with renewable energy firm Ecotricity, the plug-in points will offer a real incentive for residents considering electric vehicles.
Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "It's really exciting that we will be amongst the first areas outside the major cities to be able to offer charging posts for electric vehicles in public places. It means that residents who are considering an electric vehicle now or in the future can do so in the knowledge that public charging posts will be available for them in Bedford. Even better, we have agreement that the electricity for these will be provided free of charge. With the range and affordability of electric cars set to grow in the coming months and years, it is great that we are able to provide residents with the confidence that should they use an electric vehicle, we will have the infrastructure in place to support them. As electric cars become more widely available over the coming months and years, local residents will be well placed to take advantage of the electric car revolution."
