Commenting on the announcement that a major tidal energy project is to be built in the Sound of Islay, Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
"Scotland has the potential to be a world leader in marine renewables. We have the resources, the skills and ambition to make that happen. However, it is vital we create opportunities to take devices from initial testing, through demonstration to full-scale arrays as quickly as possible.
"That is why today's announcement about the Islay tidal project is very welcome, building on work already done at the test centre in Orkney and looking ahead to full deployment in the near future.
"Tidal energy can provide a steadfast and sustainable energy source. Today's announcement provides further evidence that Scotland is leading the world in its development."
