CORNWALL'S MPs SIGN UP TO 10:10 CAMPAIGN

The entire Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Team for Cornwall, the 5 MPs as well as the party's parliamentary candidates, have signed up to the 10:10 climate change campaign - a project urging everyone to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010 and do their bit for the environment.

Since 10:10 was launched last month, more than 35,000 people, 1,200 businesses and 850 schools and organisations have pledged their support.

The issue will be debated and voted on today in Parliament when the Liberal Democrats lead an opposition day motion backing the campaign. It will propose signing Parliament up to the 10:10 proposals and call on the government to achieve a 10% reduction in public sector emissions by the end of next year.

Cornwall Council has so far refused to commit itself to 10:10. The council did agree to endorse the Cornish Declaration last month - a local commitment to tackle climate change - but this has no targets to cut carbon emissions.

Commenting, Julia said:

"I, like thousands of others who have signed up to the 10:10 campaign, am doing what I can to make a difference. Liberal Democrat councils have been leading the way on 10:10 and committing themselves to taking real action.

"It's disappointing that Cornwall Council are not supporting the campaign but I hope that after today's events in Parliament they will think again and make a firm commitment to cut emissions by 10% by the end of 2010."

Andrew George MP added:

"The next few weeks and months are crucial in our efforts to tackle climate change and with December's world talks in Copenhagen fast approaching, we need to act now - today's vote is an opportunity for the Government to lead from the front."
