GOVERNMENT MUST PUSH FOR EU WIDE BAN ON OLD LIGHT BULBS - HALL

March 13, 2007 12:00 AM

Commenting on the inclusion of the phase out of old-fashioned light bulbs in the Government's draft climate change bill, Lib Dem European Energy spokesperson Fiona Hall said:

"I welcome the Government's proposal to phase out old-fashioned energy wasting light bulbs.

"Banning incandescent bulbs would bring a significant cut in CO2 emissions. The light bulb company Osram have estimated that if every household in the UK switched even one of its old-fashioned light bulbs to an energy saving version, a power station could be closed down.

"European-level legislation to take old-style incandescents of the market needs to be brought forward as soon as possible. I will continue to push hard for this in the European Parliament and I hope the UK Government will keep up the pressure in the Council of Ministers, following Chancellor Merkel's initiative."
