New figures which show an increase in carbon dioxide emissions demonstrate that the government is not doing enough to address climate change according to MP Susan Kramer.

The Richmond Park MP has signed a Commons motion which has the backing of over half of all MPs and will be supporting a new back bench Bill in the Spring.

She is also a leading member of the All Party Climate Change group.

Her concerns come as the government published new figures showing a rise in carbon dioxide emissions last year.

Susan Kramer said:

"A half per cent increase in emissions, in 2004, is half a per cent in the wrong direction. Since 1997 the trend has been upwards with a 2. 9 per cent increase overall.

"Living in the Richmond and Kingston areas we are all conscious of the environmental impact of Heathrow and aircraft emissions so we can experience at first hand the impact on the environment.

" Better public transport would reduce car use too but we must get the government to lead by example and get the statistics to move in a downwards direction."
