Friends of the Earth Launch Local Global Warming Campaign
The local branch of Friends of the Earth has launched a campaign to push climate change to the top of the political agenda. They met Vincent Cable MP to hand over large numbers of postcards signed by local supporters asking him to give top priority for deep cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, backed up by legally binding targets.
Vincent Cable said: "Our borough has one of the worst records in CO2 emissions largely because of very high levels of car use, in particular the popularity of vehicles which are highly polluting. With so many families now collecting children from school on the 'school run' the cumulative effect on CO2 emissions is very large. The problem is that many people have become aware of the dangers associated with global warming but assume that it is none of their concern. If the trends continue as they are, future governments will be forced into much more draconian measures."
