Tackling climate change

October 9, 2003 12:00 AM

Earth.A full implementation of the Kyoto protocol is key to tackling climate change. You can help bring this about by lobbying three of the key international leaders: President Putin, President Bush and Tony Blair.

Suggested email for President Putin (you can cut and paste the text below and email it to president@kremlin.ru):

Dear President Putin,

I would like to urge you not to turn your back on your global responsibilities as a world leader by failing to commit Russia to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol.

Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing the globe today. Britain's leading climatologist, Sir John Houghton has called climate change "a weapon of mass destruction."

Russia is the second largest producer of CO2 in the world. Curbing production of these gases is essential for the future of our planet - and for the future prosperity of both my country and yours.

Those countries, communities and people who are most seriously affected by climate change are looking towards you to take a lead in tackling climate change.

If you don't change your mind, you will kill off the Kyoto protocol and future generations will not forgive you.

Suggested email for President Bush (you can cut and paste the text below and email it to president@whitehouse.gov):

Dear President Bush,

I would like to urge you not to turn your back on your global responsibilities as a world leader by failing to commit America to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol.

Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing the globe today. Britain's leading climatologist, Sir John Houghton has called climate change "a weapon of mass destruction."

The USA is the largest producer of CO2 in the world.

Suggested letter to Tony Blair:

Dear Mr Blair,

I would like to urge you to use your position as a global leader to urge the leaders of the USA and the Russian Federation to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing the globe today. Your own top climate scientist, Sir John Houghton, has called climate change "a weapon of mass destruction."

Britain has played a hugely important and constructive role in getting the Kyoto protocol drawn up - but without the ratification of either Russia or the US all the effort will go to waste.

Sometimes friends need to be tough with each other - and now is the time for Britain to get tough with Russia and the US over global warming. Curbing production of CO2 is essential for the future of our planet. Those countries, communities and people who are most seriously affected by climate change are looking towards you to take a lead in tackling climate change.

Note: after a long delay, the Prime Minister finally can be emailed, but Number 10's own website recommends writing if you want a reply, so it is best to post a letter to Rt Hon Tony Blair MP, 10 Downing Street, London, SW1A 2AA.
