CPREMember of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, has this week welcomed Otley's Bondgate Bakery to Westminster for the launch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England's (CPRE) Mapping Local Food Webs National Report, where it was able to showcase a range of its excellent baked goods for Parliamentarians from across the House.

The CPRE's report aimed to reveal the extent, nature and benefits of local food webs in parts of England, increase public and policy-makers' awareness of local food networks and identify ways to improve support for the production, supply and sale of local produce around England. Otley was one of 19 locations across England to be mapped; Bondgate featured in the CPRE report From Field to Fork: Otley.

Bondgate was hailed as a champion of local food in the report; enriching the local economy through, not only sales, but also supplying other local businesses. The bakery has also received national acclaim for the quality of its food from a number of sources and now even supplies Harvey Nichols in Leeds.

Mulholland welcomed the bakery to the launch which will showcased local producers and businesses from around the country to Parliamentarians and guests.

The CPRE also launched the 30:30 Challenge at the reception which asks people to commit to sourcing 30 percent of their food from within 30 miles for a month. The aim of the challenge is to highlight the quality and diversity of locally produced food and encourage people to support their local high streets.

Commenting, Greg said:

"I am delighted to have welcomed Steve and Sally from the Bondgate Bakery in Otley into Westminster. It is fantastic that they have been given the opportunity to showcase their delicious produce to a national audience at the Campaign to Protect Rural England's Parliamentary reception.

"Otley is well known for being a distinctive market town, with a thriving centre and a number of excellent local cafes and shops, supplying a wide range of local produce. I am thrilled that one of these local businesses, Bongate Bakery, which has received a number of national accolades, was selected to take part in this celebration of local produce.

Commenting on the report Graeme Willis, Senior Food Campaigner for CPRE, said:

"In setting out to map local food webs we hoped to measure the fantastic contributions these networks make. We achieved just that, finding great examples of local food webs helping to buck national trends of high street decline.

"We are now asking people to sign up to our 30:30 challenge and attempt to source around 30% of their food from within 30 miles. We hope this will inspire people to get involved with their local food web and support these fantastic local businesses."
