SOUTHAMPTON LIB DEM'S LEADER SLAMS TORY COUNCIL'S RECYCLING RECORD

Southampton City Council's Liberal Democrat Group Leader,
Cllr Adrian Vinson, has slammed the Council's Conservative Administration for their 'deplorable' record on recycling.
Under the Tories the percentage of waste recycled, composted or sent for re-use has fallen by one fifth, to under a quarter of the total.
The latest shortfall, nearly 2.5% in 2011-12, can be largtely attributed to the prolonged industrial dispute sparked off by the cut in pay and other terms and conditions imposed in last year's Conservative budget. The on-going work to rulke is also preventing implemantation of measures designed to reverse the trend.
Southampton also has by far the worst record for contamination of recyclables of any authority in the Hampshire-wide project integra consortium.
Cllr Vinson says: 'Southampton Conservatives have compounded a poor performance on recycling since taking office with an escalating decline due to their inept handling of the budget and subsequent dispute. The adverse environmental effects of their policies are a blot on our city's record.'
