North East store helps axe illegal timber

North East Euro-MP Fiona Hall has welcomed the example set by a Newcastle DIY store in halting the use of illegal timber.

With a year still to go before a Europe-wide ban comes into effect, Fiona visited the Scotswood Road B&Q which already boasts 100% compliance.

Fiona said, "Illegal logging causes huge economic and environmental damage. It was a long fight to get shady timber imports outlawed and throughout the process we were told a ban on illegally logged timber would be unworkable. But now we see it working right here in the North East, with traceability for every single piece of wood sold.

"It is satisfying to see changes I've been at the forefront of making at a European level reflected on the ground here at home. This visit also helps me to be able to say I've seen, at first hand, that this legislation really can work.

"It is clear from talking to staff that they're fully behind the move to sustainable and responsibly-sourced products.

"UK consumers have also played a vital role in getting the import ban on illegal timber into place. It is thanks to concerned consumers and to companies like B&Q who responded to that concern that all timber coming into the EU will in future be lawful."
