EU action drives down car emissions

EU action to reduce carbon emissions from cars is succeeding, according to the latest figures.
A new study from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders shows that CO2 emissions from UK cars fell by 3.5% in 2010, one of the highest annual reductions on record.
Fiona Hall, MEP for the North East, helped formulate the European-level legislation which had led to the production of greener cars. She says the focus on lowering emissions will help North East businesses and drivers.
"Legislation agreed at an EU level is driving companies to innovate and introduce more climate-friendly cars. Not only does this have a positive effect on the environment, it helps cut fuel costs for drivers.
"The North East is particularly well placed to benefit from legislation to reduce vehicle emissions as this region is positioning itself right at the forefront of green vehicle manufacturing."
