Gridlocked Britain: Traffic figures up again - Thurso

Figures released today by the Department for Transport reveal that traffic on British roads is still rising, with overall traffic levels 1.8% higher in January to March this year, compared with the same period last year.
The new data also reveals that British cars covered 1.2 billion more miles in the first three months of 2004 than in the same three months in 2003 - an increase of 2% in car traffic.
Commenting on the figures, John Thurso MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, said:
"Britain is becoming a gridlocked nation.
"The Government needs to give motorists a real incentive to get out of their cars. Until we have a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system, the roads will remain congested.
"The Government has shied away from the problem for too long. It's time Ministers made a real commitment to cutting traffic levels and kept to it."
