SCOTLAND: LANARKSHIRE HOUSEHOLDS GO GREEN

November 20, 2003 2:01 PM

Households in South Lanarkshire are set to benefit from a green waste collection service and home composting units.

The Council's recycling initiatives will benefit from an award of £1,146,000 from the Strategic Waste Fund.

Environment Minister Ross Finnie said:

"This money will make sure households across South Lanarkshire benefit from the opportunity to recycle, providing them with much more sustainable ways of managing their waste.

"But recycling on its own is not enough. We all need to reduce the amount of waste we produce and re-use products whenever possible. These three strands of action can help Councils meet their targets for waste minimisation, recycling and reduction in landfill."

South Lanarkshire Council will receive £384,000 in 2003/2004, £271,000 in 2004/2005, and £350,000 in 2005/2006 to introduce a green waste collection scheme. This scheme will result in an additional 4,600 tonnes being diverted from landfill.

They will also receive £81,000 in 2003/2004 and £60,000 in 2004/2005 to provide 10,000 households with home composting units.
