WATER FLUORIDATION: LOCAL AUTHORITIES SHOULD HAVE POWER TO OPT IN OR OUT - BAKER

The Water Bill is being debated in the House of Commons

Commenting on the targeted water fluoridation amendment in the Water Bill, which begins its second reading in the House of Commons today (Monday 8th September), Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"The case for, what is effectively, compulsory medication has not yet been made. But it is the right of local communities to decide on this issue.

"The decision to add or remove fluoride from the water supply must be given to locally elected bodies, not to unelected officials.

"The question of fluoridation is an important element of the Water Bill, but must not overshadow other, vital aspects of the Bill, including the questions surrounding the EU Framework Directive, abstraction licences and water metering."
